Safety Management Training

Safety management training gives owners, leaders, supervisors and safety staff the knowledge they need to build, lead and improve a health and safety management system that fits the way their workplace really runs.

A safety management system isn’t a binder on a shelf. It’s the way your organization finds hazards, assigns responsibility, trains and supervises people, checks that controls are working, learns from incidents and keeps getting better. When those pieces connect, safety becomes part of how work is planned and done. When they don’t, the gaps show up as injuries, claims, orders and disappointing audit results.

Calgary Safety Consultants brings our safety management system training together in one place. Each course covers a core building block of a working system, from legal duties and leadership to hazard assessment, inspections, incident investigation, emergency preparedness and worker participation. Every course listed here has a self-paced online option, several can also be delivered as live virtual or classroom training for your group, and one is completely free: How to Build a Safety Orientation for New Employees.

Why it matters

What Is Safety Management System Training?

A health and safety management system is the whole system an organization uses to manage health and safety. It includes leadership commitment and policy, the roles and duties of each person, hazard assessment and control, training and competency, inspections, incident reporting and investigation, emergency preparedness, worker participation, records and a regular review by leadership. Health and safety programs sit inside that system. They deal with specific hazards or activities, such as working alone or lockout and tagout, and they’re supported by a clear hierarchy of policies, procedures, safe work practices and forms.

Safety management system training teaches people how those pieces fit together and what their own part is. Owners and senior leaders learn what they’re accountable for. Managers and supervisors learn how to put the system to work every day. Safety coordinators and committee members learn how to check that it’s working and how to help it improve.

It matters legally, too. Every Canadian OH&S jurisdiction places a general duty on employers to protect the health and safety of their workers, and supervisors carry duties of their own. Section 217.1 of the Criminal Code adds a legal duty on anyone who directs how work is done to take reasonable steps to prevent bodily harm. After an incident, the question becomes whether the organization took every reasonable precaution in the circumstances. A working safety management system, run by people who’ve been trained to run it, is how you show that you did.

Strong safety management pays off in everyday business results:

  • fewer injuries and lower claims costs
  • less downtime and fewer disruptions
  • smoother client prequalification and bids
  • a clear record of due diligence
  • leaders and supervisors who know their role
  • a stronger starting point for COR or SECOR

Free Course: How to Build a Safety Orientation for New Employees

A new employee’s first days are when they first meet your safety management system. It’s when they learn their rights and duties, the hazards of the job, who to go to with a concern and what to do in an emergency. New and young workers face a higher risk of injury in their first months on the job, so a well-built orientation is one of the most practical parts of any system.

Our free online course, How to Build a Safety Orientation for New Employees, shows owners, supervisors and safety coordinators how to build that orientation from the health and safety program they already have. It’s short and practical, with four lessons of about 10 minutes each, and it points you to credible outside sources as you go.

The course is built on one rule: your company needs a functional health and safety program or manual before you can build an orientation around it. If you don’t have one yet, our Starter Safety Manual Package or the Health and Safety for Small Business course is the place to start.

  • 100% free and online
  • self-paced, under an hour
  • four short lessons
  • single enrolment, one learner per account

Company-specific training

Safety Management Training Built Around Your Own System

Our courses teach the principles every safety management system relies on. Your people also need to know how your own system works: your policies, your procedures, your forms and the way your crews actually do the job.

Custom Safety Training builds company-specific training from your own safety program. It can be delivered as a branded PowerPoint with a participant handout, a narrated training video, or a private online course on our learning platform with certificates and completion records. It’s a practical way to roll out a new or updated program, train new supervisors, or prepare your workforce before an audit.

Beyond training

Need Help Building or Improving Your Safety Management System?

Training builds understanding and skill, but it won’t write your safety program for you. If you need a system built, reviewed or brought up to an audit standard, our consultants can work alongside you while your people train.

Our safety management systems and leadership development service helps organizations design and strengthen their system and the leaders who run it. Small employers can start with the Starter Safety Manual Package, and established programs can be checked with an OHS compliance audit and safety program gap assessment.

Working toward COR or SECOR? Our COR and SECOR certification support and COR Readiness Review provide consulting, program development and audit-preparation support. Certificates are issued by the certifying partner after a successful audit, and training on its own doesn’t guarantee certification.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Safety Management Training

Clear answers about what safety management training covers, who it’s for, how it’s delivered and how to get your team started.

What is safety management training?

Safety management training teaches people how to build, lead and improve a workplace health and safety management system. It covers the building blocks of a working system, including legal duties, leadership, hazard assessment and control, inspections, incident reporting and investigation, emergency preparedness, worker participation and orientation.

What is a safety management system?

A safety management system is the whole system an organization uses to manage health and safety: leadership commitment and policy, roles and responsibilities, hazard assessment and control, training, inspections, incident investigation, emergency preparedness, worker participation, records and leadership review. Hazard-specific programs, such as working alone or lockout and tagout, sit inside it.

Who should take safety management system training?

Owners and senior leaders, managers, supervisors and forepersons, safety coordinators and advisors, HR and office managers who look after safety, and joint health and safety committee members or representatives. Each course page explains who that course is built for.

Which safety management course should I start with?

Small employers building a program for the first time usually start with Health and Safety for Small Business. Organizations that already have a program often start with OH&S Leadership Training for their supervisors and managers. If you’re not sure, book a free 30-minute consultation and we’ll help you choose.

Is there a free safety management course?

Yes. How to Build a Safety Orientation for New Employees is a free online course that takes under an hour. It shows employers how to build a new employee safety orientation from their existing health and safety program or manual. Free courses are single enrolment, so each learner signs up with their own account.

Are the courses available online, virtually or in a classroom?

Every course on this page has a self-paced online option. Leadership, hazard assessment, inspection, incident investigation, emergency response and committee training can also be delivered to groups as live virtual or classroom sessions. Use the form on this page to request group training.

Does safety management training help with COR or SECOR?

Yes. Trained leaders, supervisors and committee members make it much easier to build and maintain the system a COR or SECOR audit looks at. Training on its own doesn’t earn or guarantee certification, though. Certificates are issued by the certifying partner after a successful audit. Our COR and SECOR certification support can help you prepare.

Do the courses cover my province or territory?

The courses are built for Canadian workplaces. Understanding Canadian OH&S Legislation and Health and Safety for Small Business cover all 14 Canadian OH&S jurisdictions, and our online committee course is Alberta-focused. Each course page explains its legal scope. Laws change, so always confirm the current requirements with your regulator.

Can I enrol my team?

Yes. Employers can buy seats for several learners in one order, and a 10% group discount applies automatically to 10 or more seats of the same course. After you check out, complete our Group Training Student Information form so we can set up each learner’s account. Free courses are single enrolment only.

Will the training build my safety management system for me?

No. Training teaches your people how to build and run the system, but it doesn’t write your program. If you need a program built or reviewed, our workplace safety consulting services can help.

Is this a certification, and is it approved by a regulator?

Learners receive a Certificate of Completion when they finish an online course and its requirements. It records completion of the training. It isn’t a professional designation, it isn’t approved by any regulator, and it doesn’t confirm that your safety management system meets the law.

How much does safety management training cost?

Online courses are priced per learner, plus GST, and the current price is shown on each course page. Virtual, classroom and onsite group training is quoted to your group size and needs, and the price is confirmed in writing before booking.
