John Duplessis brings over 30 years of experience in Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), with a focus on creating safer work environments and achieving zero injury cultures. As the founder and lead consultant at Calgary Safety Consultants, John has worked across various high-risk industries, including oil & gas, construction, and green energy, where he has helped organizations realize significant safety improvements and cost efficiencies.
John’s approach combines strong leadership with flexible management systems that engage both HSE staff and management teams, ensuring top-down engagement and respect for bottom-up feedback. His expertise includes COR Audits, safety culture assessments, incident investigations, OH&S management system development, and training. His extensive industry experience has resulted in a proven track record of developing comprehensive safety programs that align with ISO 45001 standards and other regulatory requirements.
In previous roles, John has held key leadership positions, including HSE Manager at League Projects and EHS Manager at Gibson Energy. He has led major safety initiatives that have reduced recordable injury rates and improved safety management systems across large-scale projects, including a $500 million capital project for midstream operations.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University and a Diploma in HSE from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. He is also a Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and an active member of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers (CSSE) and the Alberta Society of Health and Safety Professionals.
John’s passion for safety began when he was chosen from 400 applicants to intern in a Health, Safety, and Environmental Program at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Since then, he has dedicated his career to helping organizations achieve zero harm targets. As a hands-on trouble-shooter, safety advocate, and mentor, John strives to guide organizations toward interdependence, where health, safety, and wellbeing are everyone’s priority.
Outside of work, John enjoys reading thriller novels, writing fiction, traveling, cooking, and spending time with his wife and three children. He is dedicated to continuous improvement, not only in safety but also in his personal pursuits.
